 Letchworth's Glen Iris Inn:

1870’s Look, Modern Comfort

The heart of William Pryor Letchworth’s estate has undergone many, many changes from the time it was his personal residence until modern times.

Since 1990 efforts have been made to restore certain areas of the Inn to a condition that represents the best understanding of how the rooms looked when Mr. Letchworth lived there. Part of the work was done in the section of the dining room known as the Letchworth Room. This is a small dining room on the north side of the building. Here, a fireplace has been uncovered that was covered over years ago to create a display room in what was then a gift shop. The mantel and wood trim had been stored in the basement of the museum.

The most dramatic changes were in the Cherry Suite where the ceiling fixtures and folding accordion wall were removed along with shelving units that were not part of Mr. Letchworth’s concept. Original furniture is in the room with some reproduction lamps and more authentic wall coverings for the Victorian period.

In the winter of 1991-92 much more work was done to restore the old areas, such as the present gift shop, the entry hall, and the third floor library, to the way they appeared when Letchworth lived in them. Modern necessities of heating, ventilating and air conditioning units have been added, as has a modern sprinkler system that is more concealed. New wallpapers and lighting fixtures in rooms, halls and stairways are appropriate to the time Mr. Letchworth was in residence.

Visitors will notice the changes as soon as they approach the Inn which was repainted in 1994 to reflect the colors of the late 1800's when Mr. Letchworth resided there. As they step into the Inn a lovely Victorian foyer greets them, complete with dragonflies on the ceiling!
